Abstract

In the 19th century, important transformations occurred in the printing industry: the lowering of production costs, the invention of lithography, the mechanization of this process, etc. In any case, a key process remains a strictly manual activity: the composition of the text by the typesetter through the handling of types. In France, typesetting was a respectable profession and as such is included in the Costumbrista texts of this country: a profession taken over by subjects with an appreciable educational level. On the other hand, various Spanish and Latin American
Costumbrista and Realistic texts offer us, from a humorous vein, the representation of the typesetter as one of the main enemies of the writer, whose intellectual production can be ‘spoiled’ by the errors of this employee, product of their ignorance or joking spirit. These tense relationships are exposed in various Costumbrista texts.
