Abstract

In spite of recent critical works carried out from different though complementary perspectives on the reception of Ruben Darío and his literary works, a more exhaustive search of Spanish periodicals between 1882 and 1899 throws up material which allows us to draft a more reliable account of the Nicaraguan writer’s reception: poems, short-stories, articles and the pieces of news published about his public life during his stay in Spain. This succinct article collects a sample of references to Darío’s reception in the press during the aforementioned dates and analyses them qualitatively and quantitatively. It proves their prime value when evaluating the early stages of the prolific debate about Ruben Darío and modernismo, the epicentre of which is dated to the first decade of 20th century.
