Abstract

Laura Méndez de Cuenca (1853-1928), is a turn of the century Mexican writer, whose extensive narrative work — chronicle, short story, and novel — should be studied in depth, for her contribution to the Mexican literary canon of the late XIXth and early XXth centuries. Her short stories’ collection, Simplezas (1910), touches on issues concerning the confrontation between México’s finisecular society and Modernity, marked by a particular type of determinism. The social paradoxes arising from the aforementioned encounter can be overcomed through a critical educational vision, which makes the notion of education, as a primary need, the leitmotif that gives cohesion to the different stories that make up the book.
